Paste English text to get frequency lists by word form, lemma or lemma + part of speech, fine-grained POS features, verb phrase analysis, lexical statistics and coverage against learner word lists.
Paste or type text above, or open a .txt file, then press Analyse. Results, charts and the comparison will appear here.
Bars are coloured by the item's most frequent part of speech.
Each word is assigned one type within its class: nouns by kind and derivation, verbs by function and semantic domain (Biber et al. 1999), adjectives by position and degree, adverbs by meaning, pronouns, determiners and conjunctions by subclass. Open Parts of speech for every feature.
Rates are per 1,000 words. z compares this text with the 4,048 BNC texts; it is capped at ±3 so one rare feature in a short text cannot dominate. Contribution is z with the sign it carries on its dimension.
Click a collocate to see the lines where it occurs with the node.
Text A is the text analysed above. Paste a second text, or a reference corpus, as text B. Keywords are items used significantly more in one text than the other.
Share of each type within the class, so texts of different lengths compare fairly.
Matching is by lemma, so inflected forms count (studies → study) but derived forms do not (reading ≠ read), as the NGSL is a lemma list. British and American spellings are both matched. Tokens are running words; types are distinct lemmas. Proper nouns and numbers are counted separately, as in most lexical frequency profiles.
Lemmas outside NGSL, the supplement, NAWL, TSL and BSL, with their position in the extended NGSL frequency ranking (31,241 lemmas) where available.
Paste a word list (one lemma per line, or separated by commas or spaces). It is matched against lemmas and word forms and kept in this browser.
Hover over a measure name, or read the line beneath it, for the formula. All lexical diversity measures are computed on lowercased word forms.
Label words with their type, class or tag. Hover over a word for its tag, lemma, all features and list band. Untick a class to fade it out.
